Sadaqah is the act of charity. Sadaqah is given only out of compassion and love, out of friendship, and out of religious obligation. You can provide it by giving a smile to your neighbour, by clearing someone’s path from potential harm, or by feeding the hungry or digging a well to provide drinking water for someone. Sadaqah is an act of kindness given without expecting anything in return; Sadaqah is the devotion to do something for someone without expecting anything in return. Simple gestures like sharing a smile with a stranger or answering a question can make a huge impact. You can donate to the homeless you pass on the street or offer support to a friend or loved one in need.
‘The best form of charity is to give someone water (to drink).’
(Ibn Majah)
Sadaqah or charity is very important in Islam. It is established that acts of charity increase happiness for both the giver and receiver, and those who give Sadaqah will be rewarded in the Hereafter. We can guess how much it is for Muslims because Sadaqah is mentioned in the Quran several times. The Holy Quran says several times the benefit reaped from giving to charity and supporting the poor as part of Sadaqah. Sadaqa helps one to avert calamity and increase blessings, sustenance, and prosperity.
In the Qur’an, Allah says:
“Who is it that would loan Allah a goodly loan so He may multiply it for him many times over? And it is Allah who withholds and grants abundance, and to Him you will be returned,”
(Qur’an, 2: 245).
In summary, Sadaqah is an act Muslims perform exclusively for Allah’s pleasure. This indicates that this is one of the things that Allah likes the most about his creatures. May Allah grant us the ability to give charity.
