KORT Zakat Appeal 2024

 

السلام عليكم ورحمة الله وبركاته

May the blessings and mercy of Allah descend upon us all this Ramadhan 2024.

With the month of Ramadhan drawing near once more, thousands of needy families, Orphans and Widows fill the streets of Pakistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir desperately waiting for your Zakat.

ZAKAT: FULFIL YOUR OBLIGATION AND PAY ZAKAT TODAY AS WELL AS SUPPORT THOSE MOST IN NEED

Families all across the whole of AJK and Pakistan are closely anticipating receiving your Zakat in order to provide their families with sufficient provisions to last.

In the Holy Qur’an, Zakat has not been classed as a burden but rather a means of self-purification of our sins and upliftment of our rank in the creator’s eyes.

“And establish the prayer and give Zakat, and whatever good you send forth for your own selves, you shall find it (the reward) by Allah.” [2:110]

So please don’t delay in giving charity in the path of Allah and be sure to choose a reliable and 100% donation charity like KORT.

You can pay your compulsory 2.5% Zakat ul Maal (Annual Zakat of total wealth) as well as Zakat ul Fitr (Fitrana) through KORT. We will carry your Zakat forth to the needy and deprived in order to create ease to the lives of vulnerable communities.

2.5% Zakat ul Maal

This is the annual Zakat we must give, of which only 2.5% a person must pay out of their total wealth, land and commodities. Please refer to your local Imam in regard to the specifics of Zakatable items.

Every sane, adult Muslim whose wealth exceeds the current Nisab value must pay this type of Zakat. The Nisab value stands at 87.5g of pure gold or 613g of silver. The value of 613g of silver as of 19th of February 2024 = £362.

Zakat ul Fitr (Fitrana)

Pay your Zakat ul Fitr (Fitrana) currently for simply £5. You can pay any time before the Eid al Fitr prayer but the earlier you pay the quicker it reaches the needy on time. Please send your donations by the 15th of Ramadhan to ensure that our recipients will get it in time to celebrate Eid.

Orphan Pack

Donate towards an Orphan Pack for £100 and you will be assisting an orphan child with the tools to continue in their studies. An Orphan Pack includes their Uniform, Stationary and any other school books/notebooks required for the academic year.

Eid Gift

By donating £45, you will be providing an orphan studying at KORT with a pair of Eid clothes, footwear and a gift. We usually hire vendors to come to the Complex so that the children can come and choose their own gifts. This provides a safer environment for them whilst allowing them the freedom to choose their own gift.

Fidya

For those who are unable to fulfil the obligation of fasting during Ramadhan and are uncertain of when they will be able to recover later on in life, Allah has created a means of ease as well as reward. This year the cost of Fidya will remain as £5 per fast or £150 for full Ramadhan and will go towards the poor and needy of Azad Kashmir.

Wheelchairs

A wheelchair is currently priced at £60 and your donation towards one at KORT becomes a wheelchair for life for the recipient. We seek out those in need as well as receive applications for wheelchairs, we then assess and provide a location and date for the collective distribution of these. Lastly, we reassure those receiving wheelchairs of a free replacement in the unlikely event of any damage or fault to them.

Sewing Machines

Sewing Machines will remain prices at £35 this year. This enables widows and poor women with a means of sustenance for their families by providing them with a sewing machine as well as a few pieces of unstitched cloth to start off with. We provide a location and date for the collective distribution of these also.

We accept Sadaqah, Lillah, Zakat and Interest donations for these appeals and our registered charity runs on a 100% donation policy.

In a historic moment at the United Nations Climate Change Conference, COP28, held in Dubai, the Kashmir Orphan Relief Trust (KORT) garnered global recognition by receiving the prestigious Zayed Sustainability Prize. This esteemed accolade was presented by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, The President of the United Arab Emirates, in acknowledgment of KORT’s outstanding contributions as the Largest Orphanage in South Asia.

Investing in Sustainable Initiatives

The prize money will be directed towards projects focusing on clean water and organic farming in rural areas, as outlined by Chaudhry Mohammed Akhtar, the Founding Chairman of KORT. The KORT School and College of Excellence, established in 2016 to support children orphaned in a devastating earthquake, now serves over 500 students.

The Zayed Sustainability Prize, launched in 2008, has recognized 106 winners globally, impacting the lives of more than 378 million people across 151 countries. This year’s 11 winners, across various categories, collectively share a prize fund of $3.6 million, showcasing the global impact of innovative solutions.

Why Zakat is Important in Islam? and Where KORT Spends Your Zakat Donations?

Zakat holds significant importance in Islam and plays a crucial role in the lives of Muslims. It is one of the
Five Pillars of Islam, alongside the declaration of faith (Shahada), prayer (Salah), fasting during Ramadan
(Sawm), and the pilgrimage to Mecca (Hajj).
Here are some key questions about Zakat and why it is important.

Zakat is a mandatory duty for every adult Muslim with wealth above a certain threshold (Nisab). It is an
act of worship and a means of fulfilling one's religious obligations. Muslims believe that fulfilling the

KORT and Your Donated Zakat

Every year thousands of our brothers and sisters donate their Zakat to KORT. These donations are
usually spent on the orphan children in our care at KORT Educational and Residential Complex in Jarrikas
Mirpur. However, if we have enough resources available to sustain the orphan children in our care at
Mirpur, the KORT management decides to spend any extra available Zakat donations on the following
projects and activities.

Every year, KORT distributes food and daily-use commodities among calamity-hit and deserving families
in AJK and Pakistan as well as in other countries. During the 2022 catastrophic flood, KORT carried out
the largest relief operation in flood-hit areas in collaboration with NDMA. During the 2022 earthquake in
Afghanistan, KORT sent a huge amount of food and non-food commodities for earthquake-victim
brothers and sisters. Similarly, during the recent earthquake in Turkiye and Sirya, KORT also dispatched
several consignments containing a considerable amount of relief goods, food, and medicines in both
countries.
Especially during the month of Ramzan, KORT distributes food packages among thousands of deserving
families in AJK and Pakistan. This year too, KORT has provided thousands of food packages containing all
essential food items for a family for the entire month of Ramzan. Persons with special needs, widows,
orphans, people affected by Indian shelling at the Line of Control as well as people hit by natural
calamities are given preference.

For years now, KORT is working to empower persons with disabilities by providing wheelchairs and
enabling them to be self-reliant in terms of mobility. A large number of people living in Pakistan and AJK
lost their limbs to war and armed conflicts, especially in AJK and KPK the number of disabled people is
higher than in the other areas. Additionally, in disaster-prone areas of AJK and Pakistan people often lost
their limbs to natural calamities. The Zakat donated by our generous brothers

KORT is also running a program to empower marginalized women in society by providing them with
skills and required equipment to ensure their economic inclusion. Under this program, KORT has trained
several women in dressmaking and fashion design. Additionally, KORT has distributed thousands of
sewing machines to these deserving women. This year too, KORT has distributed sewing machines in
Pakistan and AJK.

During the winter season, KORT distributes winter clothes/uniforms among students and blankets
among deserving families in winter-prone areas of Pakistan and AJK. In many areas of AJK, families with
minimal or no income cannot afford to buy warm clothes during the winter seasons. Secondly, poor and
deserving families cannot buy blankets in winter and they rely on fire in winter seasons. The fire burnt
during winter seasons often causes conflagration and other accidents besides being a major contributor

to deforestation in the region. KORT provides warm clothes to our brothers and sisters to keep them
warm in winter.

Under the “Housing Project” KORT every year builds hundreds of houses for deserving and disaster-hit
families. Last year, we built hundreds of houses for earthquake affectees in Mirpur, and for dozens of
widows in AJK and Pakistan, Additionally, KORT is in the process to build 1000 houses for flood affectees
in the provinces of Punjab, Sindh, and Baluchistan. Additionally, KORT build dozens of houses for
widows, disabled people, and people affected by floods, land sliding, cross-LoC shelling, fire incidents,
and other national disasters.

Another Baby Saved By KORT

KORT (Kashmir Orphan Relief Trust) is a charitable organization that is dedicated to providing support and care for orphans in the Azad Kashmir region of Pakistan. The organization was founded by Chaudry Akhtar, who has since become known for his compassion and dedication towards helping children in need. Recently, Akhtar made headlines again for taking in a new-born baby who was found in a rubbish bin.

He gave the child his surname so the child would not have to face social struggles in the future and became the proud father of over 300 daughters in the KORT orphanage.

“Your wealth and your children are only a trial, whereas God, with Him is a great reward (Paradise).” (Quran 64:15)

KORT provides a wide range of services to orphans, including shelter, education, healthcare, and vocational training. 2023 Cakes For Orphans is Back

Get a taste of our delicious Chocolate Fudge cake for charity delivered straight to your doorstep this Ramadan.

A delicious two layers of chocolate flavour sponge filled and coated with a creamy chocolate flavour fudge.

Ramadan is here and with it this beautiful, blessed, and holy month brings to you Cakes4Orphans.

Since 2016 KORT has been delivering the best and delicious Chocolate Fudge Cakes to your doorstep every Ramadan.

Our volunteers take time out for 30 days in Ramadan to raise money for Kashmir Orphans Relief Trust. They deliver for 30 days before Iftar to put a smile on the faces of the children of Kashmir.

The cakes are being supplied by Bradford supplier Seafresh. The original volunteer team in Bradford has united others across United Kingdom to supply to a host of places consisting of Blackburn, Halifax, Dewsbury, Luton, Birmingham, Peterborough, High Wycombe, Bolton, Leeds, Oldham, Manchester, Rochdale, Newcastle as well as Sheffield. All profits go to KORT zakat account.

Our concept is that you can save lives with a piece of cake. Each cake is ready cut into 14 slices.

A further article will give you numbers and details of the volunteers involved in this project in Ramadan 2023.

WINTER PROJECT: Distribution Of Winter Kits

Distribution Of Winter Kits Among Students Of Government Schools Across AJK

As winter starts in Azad Jammu and Kashmir AJK, the temperature drops below freezing point and it is a hard time for people, especially school-going children living in mountainous areas of the region. However, some schools in mountainous areas with snowfall records remain closed during the winter season, and a number of schools remain open in the public and private sectors.

Children in AJK are more prone to heat loss in cold climates according to health experts. Children exposed to extreme cold for too long without warm dry breathable clothing can get frostbite or even life-threatening hypothermia. They are also at an increased risk of exercise-induced asthma.

Additionally, Cold exposure in children causes specific acute and chronic physiological responses. Acute physiological responses include shivering which reduces heat loss and increases heat production. The physiological response to chronic cold exposure also known as acclimatization means a person living in the cold temperature for a long period of time gets adjusted to the climate.

Many parents especially those who send their children to government schools, cannot afford warm clothes, uniforms sweaters caps, etc for their children.

For the last many years, our donors have generously supported us in providing winter kits to the children especially students of government schools in cold-hit areas of AJK. So far we have provided thousands of winter kits to poor and needy students in almost every district and tehsil of AJK.

This year too, KORT is distributing winter kits among students (boys and girls) of government schools. This year KORT has a target of distributing 15000 kits among students and so far thousands of kits have been distributed in Mirpur, Bhimber, Kotli, and Sudhanoti Districts. In the next phase, we have to distribute winter kits among the students in other districts especially the areas under heavy snow such as Haveli Kahuta, Jehlum Valley, Leepa Valley, and Neelum Valley.

This project will not be successful without your generous contributions and donations. The project qualified for Sadaqah, Zakat, and Lillah. So it is a humble request to join hands with us to keep these children warm during this winter season by providing them the required warm clothes.

KORT Earthquake Housing Project

Housing Project For Earthquake Affected And Vulnerable Communities In AJK

On 25the September 2019, an earthquake of 3.8 magnitudes on the rector scale, hit the city of Mirpur and its surroundings leading to at least 38 dead and around 740 injured. According to initial figures released by the Government of AJK, around 1600 houses were completely damaged in Mirpur and its surroundings, especially in rural areas.

Within a few hours of the earthquake, the KORT team started quick rescue and relief operations. Volunteers of KORT and Muskorteers rescued 100s of injured people and rushed them to the nearest hospital for first aid and treatment. The rescue operation was followed by an expanded relief operation and KORT teams provided food, medical aid, and tents to earthquake effected families in different villages.

After rescue and the relief operation were concluded, The Government of AJK appealed to KORT to join hands in the rehabilitation phase. After the initial assessment, KORT decided to build 150 houses in different areas of the Mirpur District.

The Challenge was that many of the earthquakes affected families don’t own a piece of land where they can build a new home for them.

To cope with this challenge KORT acquired a piece of land donated by a local donor and started building a model village of 28 houses on Jattlan Road for earthquake affectees and vulnerable families. Meanwhile, the construction of many other earthquake affected remained to continue for those families who have a piece of land of their own. A total of around 15 houses were built and handed over to the families.

Recently Prime Minister of Azad Jammu and Kashmir Honourable Sardar Tanveer Ilyas Khan inaugurated KORT village established for earthquake affected and vulnerable families. PM along with Ministers Chaudhary Yasir Sultan, Abdul Majid Khan, Deewan Ali Khan Chughtai, Ali Shan Soni, Chaudhary Akbar Ibrahim, Chaudhary Arshad Hussain, Azhar Sadiq, Malik Zafar Iqbal, Maqbool Gujar, PTI leader Zafar Anwar as well as secretaries and local administration of Mirpur Division where he was received by Founder / Chairman Chaudhary Mohammed Akhtar (TI), Country Director Sajid Dilawar Khan and others. PM appreciated the KORT efforts to provide a standard style of living to vulnerable communities, especially widows.

Besides that, KORT Also built and handed over houses for flood affected in Salkhala,  Neelum Valley. A number of houses were built and handed over to widow ladies and vulnerable families across AJK.

HOUSING PROJECT For Flood Affected In Pakistan

Project Update Article

Last year during monsoon season, the worst flood in history hit Pakistan which left almost one-third of Pakistan underwater. According to the figures issued by the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), around 33 million people were affected, mostly in all provinces of Pakistan. 1400 died, while the floods washed away road infrastructure, buildings, homes, and livestock leaving millions of people homeless and many others jobless.

The worst-ever climate-induced natural disaster of recent decades was caused by record torrential rainfall across the country and melting glaciers in the mountainous region in the north and northwest of the country. Overflowing sewage and floating rubbish also triggered a rise in waterborne diseases including cholera and dengue which affected millions of people, especially women, and children.

During the rescue and relief phase, the KORT team from Mirpur Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) joined hands with NDMA and carried out one of the largest relief operations in flood-hit areas of Gilgit Baltistan, AJK, Sindh, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab, and Baluchistan. With the support of our donors, supporters, and Muskoteers, our staff, and volunteers distributed 1000s of food packages and other commodities among flood affectees.

In the next phase, KORT has taken the challenge of rehabilitating the most vulnerable communities among flood affectees and decided to build up to 1000 homes for flood affectees in Sindh, Baluchistan, and Punjab Provinces. Hundreds of thousands of homes have been destroyed or flashed away and thousands are damaged beyond economic repair, unstable unfit, and unsafe to live in.

As usual, our donors have shown unprecedented generosity to donate for the cause. A considerable number of the houses for flood-affected vulnerable families are already completed, many are under construction and many others are yet to start.

 

The first batch of 100 houses was started in Rajanpur, Punjab. 70% of houses in Rajanpur were completed and handed over to flood-affected families. Many houses are in the completion phase in different far-flung areas of Sindh and Baluchistan.

The KORT is building economical homes consisting of two rooms, a bathroom, and a kitchen to provide shelter to homeless flood affectees. The estimated cost of a standard home is £1,600 per house.

Burn Centre AJK

A burn injury can be one of the most severe types of traumas requiring specialised treatment.

Burn injuries are under-appreciated injuries that are connected with significant morbidity and death. Burn injuries, especially severe burns, are accompanied by an immune and inflammatory action, metabolic changes and distributive shock that can be challenging to handle and can result in numerous organ failure.

Burn injuries result in long-lasting physical and mental scarring, causing discomfort and influencing psychological health, quality of life, ability to go back to work and subsequent mortality.

Third-degree burns that are deep and affect a large portion of skin are very serious and can be dangerous. Even first- and second-degree burns can become contaminated and cause discoloration and scarring.

Prospective complications of third-degree burns consist of:

Arrhythmia, or heart rhythm disturbances, brought on by an electrical burn.

Dehydration.

Damaging contractures and scars.

Edema (excess fluid and swelling in tissues).

Organ failure.

Pneumonia.

Seriously low – high blood pressure (hypotension) that might result in shock.

Extreme infection that might cause amputation or sepsis.

Due to a lack of specialised burns centres in AJK, KORT will be constructing a specialised Burn Centre at The DHQ Hospital in Kotli to fulfil these crucial requirements.

The approximated cost for the job is ₤500,000 and there will be 35 completely equipped ensuite client rooms at the Centre.

Sadaqah, Lillah and Interest donations are accepted for the building job.

Any amount of donation is welcome.

Nevertheless, you can sponsor a room at the Burn Centre for ₤ 14,250 and we will put a customised plaque in yours/loved one’s name outside the room.

You can co-sponsor a room at the Burn Centre for ₤7,125 and we will put a personalised plaque in yours/loved one’s name outside the space shown another donor.

You can contribute ₤2,035 for a share in a room, and you can have a personalised brick tile in yours/loved one’s name at the Burn Centre.

For those who donate ₤1,000 towards this project will likewise have a personalised brick tile in yours/loved one’s name at the Burn Centre.
