WHAT IS CONSIDERED CHARITY IN ISLAM?

Being caring and charitable for one’s fellow human beings is an essential part of Islam. When reading the Quran, one cannot help being struck by the number of times charity is mentioned.

  • Feeding the poor and needy
  • Supporting orphans
  • Supporting relatives and travellers

“When a person dies, all their deeds end except three: a continuing charity, beneficial knowledge and a child who prays for them,” (Hadith, Muslim).

Therefore, Muslims are eager to give charity which will continue to have benefits to people after their death and continue to earn the rewards.

Here question is that what types of donations Islam considers charity. There are many types of donations that Islam considered charity. Some of these are discussed below:

Sadaqa (charity) is charity given voluntarily in order to please God. Sadaqah also describes a voluntary charitable act towards others, whether through generosity, love, compassion, or faith. These acts are not necessarily physical or monetary.

Zakat is one of the five core obligations (pillars) of Islam. It requires every Muslim to give a set proportion of his or her wealth to the poor and needy in proportion to their means. Zakat can be translated to mean ‘purification’ or ‘growth’: by paying zakat a person is believed to be cleansing themselves and their remaining wealth and redistributing wealth to restore social equality and promote a more just society.

Waqf, an endowment of property or investment for a charitable purpose, whereby the assets are retained with the profits applied for charitable purposes. Although not mentioned in the Qur’an, the legal authority for waqf derives from various hadiths. Waqf is a fast-developing area of charitable giving.

According to the teachings of Islam, we can support financially to needy and orphans. We can spend money on the education , nutrition, health, and other basic necessities of needy people.

“Every child is in pledge with Aqeeqah and that should be slaughtered on the seventh day”.

Can I Give Charity On Behalf Of Someone In Islam?

You can donate on behalf of someone whether he is alive, or dead. For your loved ones, they will be rewarded in their graves and in the hereafter as It was a deed they have performed when they were alive.

“A man told the Prophet (saw) that his mother died a sudden death and did not have a chance to leave a bequest in her will, and that were she able to speak she would want to donate to charity. He then asked if the reward of charity on behalf of his deceased mother would reach her, to which the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) replied, “Yes.” [Muslim]

However, there is no difference between the opinion of the scholars concerning the charity being given on the behalf of the dead. Whoever wants to honour the deceased especially their parents must give charity on their behalf in order for them to benefit, and there is no difference of opinion among the Muslims concerning this point. This is the correct view.

Quran says about charity:
"Allah will deprive usury of all blessing but will give increase for deeds of charity. For He loves not creatures ungrateful and wicked"
"Those who believe, and do deeds of righteousness, and establish regular prayers and regular charity, will have their reward with their Lord.”

Some people choose to make donations to a charity on their own accord, but others make donations on someone else’s behalf. For instance, a couple who is getting married and does not want gifts may ask that guests donate to a favourite charity in the couple’s name. Each organization or charity has its own protocol for making a donation on behalf of someone else, but the basic process is the same.

“When a man dies, his acts come to an end, but three, recurring charity, or knowledge (by which people) benefit, or a pious son, who prays for him (for the deceased)” [Muslim].

Yes, charity goes a long way! If for example, you build a well in this life, you’d be rewarded for every drop of water one consumes from the well, even after your death. In the same way, if you were to buy a chair for a mosque, you’d be rewarded every time someone sits on that chair, even after you depart. Or, if you were to build a mosque, you’d be rewarded for every prayer performed within the mosque.

Story of Halima Sa’ddiyah

Islam holds a lot of value for humanity and has given the humankind the title of the “Ashraful Makhluqat” meaning the best and noblest of creations as mentioned in the Quran:

Indeed, Allah has created the human in the best of forms. (Surah Teen, verse 4)

Amongst the people there many who are male, female, old, young, widows and orphans.

Our Beloved Prophet Muhammed (may peace and blessings be upon him) said:

“I and the one who looks after/sponsors an orphan will be in Paradise like these two” – and he gestured with his forefinger and middle finger, holding them close together. (Bukhari)

The Story of Halima Sa’ddiyah

In the year in which Our Beloved Prophet Muhammed (may peace and blessings be upon him) was born, the tribe of Sa’d arrived in Makkah. In which the women of that tribe would take the new born children of the Makkah back to their villages.

The reason behind this is so the child can have a good and clean upbringing due to the city pollution and habits. Among their women was Halima who in future was to be the foster mother of Prophet Mohammed (may peace and blessings be upon him), who was accompanied by her husband and baby son.

They had suffered great amount of poverty throughout their lives, but this year had been more difficult because of famine that was happening throughout the Arabian Peninsula. The donkey that carried her to Makkah was so weak from hunger that it often stumbled.

Halima’s baby cried all the time because she could not feed him properly, and their old she-camel who was weak and frail failed to produce milk.

All the women of the tribe of Sa’d found a child to take back with them, but not Halima. There was one baby left in Makkah, the orphaned Prophet Muhammad (may peace and blessings be upon him). As it was customary for the baby’s father to pay the wet-nurses, none of the women would take the orphan as the prophet never had a father to pay.

Halimah said to her husband, “I don’t like that I should be the only woman of our clan to return without a baby, I want to take that orphan”. Her husband agreed, saying, “Perhaps it will be that Allah will bless us because of him.” She said, “When I went to get him, he was wearing a woollen dress, whiter than milk. A fragrance of musk spread from him. He lay on his back sleeping, underneath him a piece of green silk. I did not like to wake him because of his beauty and grace, but I came close to him and put my hand on his chest. He smiled and opened his eyes. I kissed him between his eyes and put him to my right breast which gave him all the milk he wanted. Then I placed him on the left, but he refused. That was the way he always was. After he was satisfied, I gave my son his fill. As soon as I brought him to my home, both my breasts began pouring milk.

By Allah’s grace, Prophet Muhammad (may peace and blessings be upon him) drank until he was satisfied, as did his brother. My husband went to our old camel for milk, and lo, it was full. He milked enough for both of us to drink our fill and we had a wonderful night. Later my husband said, “Oh Halima, it looks like you have picked a blessed soul. We spent the first night in blessings and bounties, and Allah continued to give us more and more ever since we chose him”. (May peace and blessings be upon him)

From this story we learn how the most beloved human being to Allah Almighty was an orphan and the virtues and blessings the care of orphans could bring into our lives.

Alhamdulillah, KORT for nearly 16 years have provided an amazing orphanage for the orphaned children of Azad Kashmir. Many children over the years have benefited from KORT’s orphanage in excelling themselves in education as well as their upbringing and their Islamic studies too.

The purpose-built orphanage in Mirpur Azad Kashmir has been running for approximately 6 years in which the children are provided with quality education as well as madrasah and extra curriculum studies taught by qualified staff members.

What Is Islamic Charity?

Islamic Charity

We must have heard this term many times amongst people. The actual meaning to Islamic charity has a very open meaning. It doesn’t always mean giving money when we hear that it is an Islamic charity.  The Arabic word for charity/Sadaqah comes from the root word ‘SIDIQ’ which means sincerity, meaning any acts according to Islam and shariah which are done with sincerity can also be classified as Islamic charity. Giving Sadaqah is seen as a sign of sincere faith and belief in Allah Almighty.

The Quran and the hadeeth of the Prophet Muhammad (may peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) have many times given the meaning of charity.

Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, “Every joint of a person must perform a charity each day that the sun rises: to judge justly between two people is a charity. To help a man with his mount, lifting him onto it or hoisting up his belongings onto it, is a charity. And the good word is a charity. And every step that you take towards the prayer is a charity and removing a harmful object from the road is a charity.” [Al-Bukhari] [Muslim]

We understand from this hadeeth the Prophet Muhammed (may peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was not referring to money, but he was mentioning acts that are also classified as worship e.g.
  • A good word is charity, saying kind words to someone or making someone motivated again is also classified as Islamic charity.
  • Removing an obstacle from someone’s pathway is also classified as charity. Meaning if you see someone walking and you know he or she is unaware of the broken glass on the floor, and you go and move and clean up the glass before he or she gets there, the Prophet Muhammed (may peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) mentions that as Islamic charity too.
Allah says in Quran: “And whoever volunteers good then indeed, Allah is appreciative and Knowing.”- [2:158]

The Prophet Muhammad (may peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) has mentioned in a hadeeth “smiling is charity”. In this case the term Islamic charity was smiling meaning making someone happy or lightening up their mood is also classified as charity

So, understanding from the above hadeeth the term Islamic charity has many meanings to it and that things such as removing an obstacle from a path is also classified as Islamic charity. So next time we decide to do something good, think, rectify our intentions, and whatever you do in life, do it for the sake of Allah Almighty. Inshallah Allah Almighty will reward us one; for doing the good act, and two; for the sincerity we had in doing the good act.

May Allah (SAW) accept our charity, and may he accept all the good things we do and may he also give us the ability to give charity with sincerity. Ameen.

The Aqeeqah Service

The birth of a new-born is a happy event for every parent. It is a sunnah of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ that when a baby is born the parents ought to perform Aqeeqah for the baby by slaughtering two goats or sheep for a male and one sheep or goat for a female.

It is mustahab to carry out the sacrifice on the seventh day after the child is born although there is no harm in performing it earlier or soon after.

What is Aqeeqah?

This sacrifice which is done for the new-born is called Aqeeqah.

Aqeeqah is a Sunnah to do after your giving birth by sacrificing an Animal. This is among the must-do Sunnahs after the birth of a child.

In other words, Aqeeqa resembles a sadaqah you give.

Based on a hadith from Jafar al-Sadiq (RA) doing Aqeeqah removes many of the difficulties and calamities from the child’s life.

For the baby there must be Aqeeqah, on behalf of the child make sacrifice and get rid of the hair. Hadith (Bukhari).

When Should Aqeeqah Be Performed?

The preferable approach for Aqeeqah is that it should be performed on the seventh day if not then the 14th or 21st and so on. Some scholars have said that this can be continued till the child has become fully grown and state Aqeeqah can be performed then. After this duration carrying out Aqeeqah is unimportant. Some scholars given the Fatwa that Aqeeqah stands till the day of one’s death. If somebody after becoming an adult performs his own Aqeeqah, according to some scholars it is not valid however according to some scholars it’s permissible.

What Is The Function Of Aqeeqah?

The practice of Aqeeqah is extremely encouraged. It is to be performed by the elders of them family or the guardians of the baby. Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and his companions utilized to perform Aqeeqa when they were bestowed with a new-born. There are lots of benefits in the performance of Aqeeqah. The Condition Of The Animal For Aqeeqah

The condition of the animals in Aqeeqah is the same as the conditions for the animals in Qurbani. The animals to be sacrificed need to be a goat, cow, or camel. For camels, it must be older than 6 years, for cows the age need to be older than 3 years and for goats, it must be older than 2 years. They must be healthy and have no form of handicap such as blind, sick, limp and undernourished. The animals must be sacrificed and slaughtered in the suitable humane way.

What Is Muharam?

Numerous Muslims still think Muharram is a unfortunate month due to the occurrence of Karbala. We know that it was an unfortunate occasion but remember one thing that according to Sahih Muslim: 1163 (a) and Tirmidhi: 438, this is Allah’s month. How can Allah’s month be unfortunate for His servants? On the contrary, it is one of the accomplishments of Husain (R.A.) that his martyrdom occurred on the day of Ahsura.

“Allah’s messenger ordered (the Muslims) to fast on the day of ‘Ashura, and when fasting in the month of Ramadan was prescribed, it became optional for one to fast on that day (Ashura) or not.” (Sahih Al Bukhari)

Things To Do In Muharram

Muharram is the month when fasting is strongly recommended (though fasting the entire month is only recommended in Ramadan).

Ashura is the 10th day of Muharram and is the most spiritual day amongst all its days. When the Prophet (S.A.W.) came to Madinah, he fasted on the day of Ashura and directed the Muslims to keep fast on this day. When the fasts of Ramadan were made obligatory, the fasting on this day was made optional. However, according to lots of genuine Hadiths, fasting on the day of Ashura is a verified Sunnah of the Holy Prophet (S.A.W.).

Muslims consider the 9th and 10th of Muharram as significant days in the Islamic calendar and observe fast on these days.

The Messenger of Allah (saw) said, ‘The best fasting after Ramadan is the Sacred Month of Allah (Muharram)…’ (Muslim)

Alhamdolilah with the help of Allah swt, KORT managed to do Qurbani in 36 different cities and locations in AZAD KASHMIR and PUNJAB. Over 60,000 people benefited. We thank all our Donors and especially all the KORT team, management and Muskorteers for managing this huge project . May Allah swt accept everyone’s support and

We make it easy for you, by asking for a donation to purchase such animals, that animal then being blessed and sacrificed in the fast and gentle method of our faith, and its meat divided and handed down to the needy and hungry, who too rarely enjoy these foods.

As you can all imagine that Qurbani Project is probably one of the hardest projects to run. This is why KORT always caps the project at a realistic number which we know we can deliver.

We Must Arrange:

  • Heaps of planning months before Qurbani
  • The animals,
  • The logistics of bringing the cattle to us,
  • The logistics to take live cattle to other cities,
  • Organize many butchers in various areas,
  • Refrigerated trucks to distribute and store meat,
  • And many volunteers to help over the 3 days of Eid.

So please before you give Qurbani next time ask yourself a question. The Charities that take on unlimited Qurbani’s how do they do it? As a Muslim it is your duty to check where your donation is being spent. The donation you give to KORT is YOUR Amanat with us. We are answerable to you, and we are answerable to Allah. We carry out all our work with this fear and thought in our mind.

To safeguard that the meat for Qurbani is acquired according to Sharia, we ensure the following:
  • That the animal is in good physical shape.
  • The animal is at the minimum age required (at least one year of age).
  • The animal was not stunned during the slaughter process and the meat is of good quality for eating.
  • The Qurbani is held after Eid prayer. (not before)

Every 2kg portion of Qurbani meat is provided safely, and properly, under supervision by our KORT Muskorteers.

Your Qurbani contribution simply surpasses the families who receive meat. Our volunteers ensure that the sacrifice and distribution of meat are done to the greatest requirement, and all meat is sourced locally. In this method, we can create jobs and promote the local economy.

COST Update of KORT QURBANI 2021:

As always KORT is 100% transparent, Alhamdulillah the average cost of each Qurbani animal including logistics etc is £368. This means we have £57 left over from the £425 that was given for each Qurbani. We will be contacting all our Qurbani donors to inform of above and they have an option, either we can refund the £57 or they can donate back to KORT, which we will put towards next year’s Qurbani project.

In 2020 we had money left over and we informed all our donors. All our donors asked us to keep the money and use it in 2021 Qurbani project. Allhamdullilah we purchased 9 animals (this year) with this money and gave Qurbani in the name of the Prophet and his blessed family. 

This is Amanat and it’s our obligatory duty to inform our donors.

KORT Qurbani Project 2021

Alhamdulillah KORT has carried out its annual Udhiya/Qurbani project 2021.

‘Udhiya’ is an Arabic term which means ‘sacrificing an animal’, and ‘Qurbani‘ is an Urdu and Persian word derived from the Arabic word ‘Qurban’ which literally means an act performed to seek Allah’s pleasure. It is technically used for the sacrifice of an animal slaughtered for the sake of Allah.

A record 212 cows were sacrificed on behalf of donors and supporters from around the world. This included 9 cows that were sacrificed in the name of our beloved Prophet Muhammed may peace and blessings be upon him from funds that were leftover during our 2020 Qurbani project.

As the prices of animals fluctuate during the Qurbani season, it is difficult to get a final price until the animals have been purchased. Therefore, KORT initially provided an estimated price for the Qurbani project based on general market rates. As KORT were able to purchase the animals at a lower cost, donors were offered a refund or were provided the option to put the balance funds towards the following years Qurbani project when animals would be sacrificed in the name of the Prophet Muhammed may peace and blessings be upon him.

What Does KORT Do With The Meat?

As KORT carries out Qurbani on behalf of oversees donors, the meat is divided into bags weighing 2kg each and distributed among poor and needy families across Azad Kashmir. 2kg meat is enough to feed a family of five persons two good meals.

KORT carries out the Qurbani project with 100% honesty and integrity. Therefore, KORT sacrificed its animals in over 20 different cities/towns across Azad Kashmir including Mirpur (KORT), Dina, Jehlum, Bhimber, Samanhi, Dadyal, Islamghar, Chakswari, Kotli, Nakhyal, Bagh (2 locations), Deerkot, Rawalakot, Trarkhal, Palandri, Haveli, Abbaspur, Hajeera, Muzaffarabad (4 locations), and Leepa Valley.

“Say, "Indeed, my prayer, my rites of sacrifice, my living and my dying are for Allah , Lord of the worlds.” (Al-'An`am 6/162)

This is to ensure that the animals can be sacrificed correctly, and the meat is provided to the poor and needy in various parts of Azad Kashmir rather than in one single location.

This year’s Qurbani project also took place in very hot weather and so a refrigerated truck was used to store the meat before it was distributed to ensure the meat didn’t go off before it reached the poor families.

Virtues of Udhiya (Qurbani)

Allah Most High Says: ‘So turn in prayer towards your Lord and sacrifice (animals).’ (Qur’an 108:2)

There is nothing dearer to Allah during the days of Udhiya than the sacrificing of animals. The sacrificed animal shall come on the Day of Judgment with its horns, hair, and hooves (to be weighed). The sacrifice is accepted by Allah before the blood reaches the ground. Therefore, Sacrifice with an open and happy heart. (Sunan Tirmidhi and Sunan Ibn Majah)

The Meat and Skin of the Udhiya Animal

It is allowed for the one performing Udhiya/Qurbani to either eat off the meat or give it to whomsoever he pleases, rich or poor, Muslim, or non-Muslim. It is preferable, however, that the meat is divided into three parts: One part for the home, one part for relatives and friends, and one part for the poor and needy.

The meat or skin of the animal cannot be sold or given to an employee or butcher in payment of his labour. It may be given as a gift. The skin of the Udhiya animal can be kept for personal use or given to anyone else for their personal use. If the skin is sold, it is necessary to give the money accrued in charity as Sadaqah.
