ZAKAT: PUrify Your Wealth and Help Those in Need

What is Zakat?

Zakat is one of the Five Pillars of Islam, a compulsory act of charity that purifies wealth and supports those in need. It is a means of redistributing wealth within the Muslim community, ensuring that everyone has access to basic necessities and a dignified life. By giving Zakat, Muslims fulfill a religious obligation and contribute to social justice.

Why Give Zakat to KORT?

At Kashmir Orphan Relief Trust (KORT), we utilize your Zakat donations to make a significant impact on the lives of vulnerable individuals in Azad Kashmir and Pakistan. Your contributions enable us to provide essential services and support to those who need it most.

Eligibility and Calculation

Zakat is obligatory for every Muslim who meets the Nisab threshold. The Nisab is the minimum amount of wealth one must have before they are liable to pay Zakat. It is equivalent to the value of 87.48 grams of gold or 612.36 grams of silver. To calculate your Zakat:

  1. Determine Your Wealth: Calculate your total savings, investments, and other assets.
  2. Deduct Liabilities: Subtract any debts and liabilities from your total wealth.
  3. Check Nisab: Ensure that your remaining wealth meets or exceeds the Nisab threshold.
  4. Calculate Zakat: Pay 2.5% of your qualifying wealth as Zakat.

  • Cash held at home or in bank accounts
  • Stocks and shares owned either directly or through investment funds-Money lent to others

You can pay Zakat at any time of year, but many people choose to do so during the holy month of Ramadan when the reward for our good deeds is multiplied. This is amplified further during Laylatul Qadr, the Night of Power, when good deeds are amplified in value by a thousand times. Also, many people give Zakat during Ramadan each year because it’s easy to track the progress and end of the lunar year, ensuring that no Zakat payments are missed.

There are eight categories as outlined in the Qur’an: The poor, those in debt, the wayfarer, those in the cause of Allah (SWT), the needy, those whose hearts are to be reconciled, to free those in captivity and those who collect and distribute Zakat payments.

Please refer to your local imams for further questions relating to Zakat.
